Get to Know Our One and Only Boss Belle: Cassandra Thompson!
Who is Cassandra?
Cassandra is the owner or Studio Pole Mama of Brass Belles located in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. She is also an instructor specializing in an array of aerial apparatuses including pole, polesilks, aerial silks, and lyra hoop.
The Birth of Boss Belle
After 17 years of working in the financial planning industry, Cassandra took a sabbatical to be with her youngest daughter and soon found herself reluctant to return once it was over. Why? Well, during her sabbatical Cassandra took up a new hobby: pole fitness. Coming from a science background and never being involved in physical sports, this was the start of her aerial journey.
“Someone told me, ‘Do what you love,’ so that was the start of my track down this path,” Cassandra explained.
And more than twelve years later since joining the aerial community, Cassandra celebrated Brass Belles’ 10 Year Anniversary in 2023. Students, instructors, family and friends all came to celebrate the special day at the studio’s November Student Showcase.
Looking Back Over the Years
There are countless of amazing stories that Cassandra could share from all the people she has encountered from the industry, and from anyone who has walked through the studio’s doors. While it’s absolutely amazing to witness students on their own aerial journey—whether it’s taking 2 years of hard work and practise to climb to from the floor to the top of the silks, or finally getting their invert—for Cassandra, it’s about the friendships and memories that makes Brass Belles.
“When friends get together and they’re from different walks of life and would never have met in the real world… when they go to each other’s weddings… or when a 22 year-old becomes Fast & Furious buddies with a 60 year-old… age doesn’t matter when people encourage each other.”
And when Cassandra says, “different walks of life,” she really means it. Brass Belles has become a space for healing as well as a place of community where people can feel safe and supported.
“It is about freedom of expression, being able to move your body in a way that is not going to be judged anywhere else, which we do in society… [it] is really important for women because we don’t have a lot of places like that.”
